WIFS 2011 National Conference and 75th Anniversary Celebration!

Cultivate Your Career, Grow Your Legacy

The 2011 conference has come to an end, and the effects will be seen in the attendees production, interpersonal relationships, and really all aspects of their lives going forward. This year's theme was: Cultivate Your Career- Grow Your Legacy. The National Conference Committee delivered in putting together speakers and training to accomplish both aspects of those goals.

On Thursday, the National President, Karen Roberts, informed us of all the accomplishments of the organization in the past year. There were several media mentions, improved services, and invitations to industry events. One fun accomplishment coming soon is that the New York Chapter (as well as National Board Members), in cooperation with Lincoln Financial, will be ringing the opening bell for the market on December 27th. We have definitely come a long way in the last 75 years!

The Gala turned out to be a great opportunity for Portland Metro Chapter! We had our very own Tiffany Helleson honored with Rookie of the Year! She recently finished her CFP program and passed her exam. We are very proud of her success so early on in her career. We also had the honor to donate $500 from our chapter, with National matching $500, to Dress for Success Portland. Barb Attridge from DFS was in attendance to receive that gift from Alice Tang and the National Board.

There were so many wonderful motivational and inspirational speakers throughout the conference. Our own Ann Schatz received a standing ovation for her keynote address. She also moderated a panel of local philanthropists, including our own Katherine Durham, in one of the highly attended breakout sessions. Portland's Mary Strasdin also educated our attendees with a tax update.

Part of the joy of conference is getting to spend time with other attendees from across the country and ask questions. The feedback from everyone regarding conference was that it was the best one yet and that Portland, and the Portland Chapter Members, were gracious hosts. There were some dine-arounds throughout Portland to spend quality time with conference attendees. Guests were able to go on a couple tours after the last session as well.

Be sure to save the date for 2012's conference, October 25-27th in Atlanta, GA. It promises to leave you with great connections, motivation, practical ideas, and lots of energy to take your business to the next level. For now, Portland and the National Conference have left a positive impact on WIFS in this 75th year of our organization's existence.

"Goodbye Glass Ceiling: The Gen Y Workplace"

Jackson Hataway, PhD

WIFS Portland Metro is excited to bring you an excellent presentation by Jackson Hataway who holds a Doctorate in Organizational Communication. He specializes in organizational development, strategic planning, team building, and organizational learning.

Jackson is a renowned professional speaker with numerous national awards in his ten years of speaking experience. He has spent a great deal of time coaching students and executives in his high-energy and engaging approach to public speaking.

The glass ceiling has been a very real obstacle for women in the workplace for the last century. Fortunately, most experts agree that the cracks in the ceiling are also becoming very real - we now have more female executives, managers and employees in the workplace than ever before. But change is slow - and we have to do all we can to keep that change moving forward.

The good news is that Gen Y and millenials have very different expectations of the workplace than past generations. Making those expectations the norm has to be our focus if we want to shatter the glass ceiling permanently. Join Jackson Hataway Ph.D. for this engaging and informative session on what women and men can do to build a culture of gender equality in the workplace.

Specifically, we'll discuss:

  • Breaking down the boys club - from the inside.
  • Making smarter hiring decision - to get the right performers in the right places.
  • Taking charge of the conversation - and ignoring the stereotypes.
  • Creating teams that support the growth and development of women - and that will allow them to share success together.

This session is intended to be part presentation, part conversation - so be prepared to be brilliant!
